9 March 2020 – The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group has published a briefing outlining a set of leadership priorities for the UK Government, which aim to engage all parts of society in taking action in response to climate change.

The UK’s new commitment to net zero requires strong leadership to translate ambition into action. In this briefing, The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group (CLG), convened by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), calls for a clear strategy championed from the top of Government, with particular focus on the priority areas set out by the UK Committee on Climate Change: buildings, transport, electricity, industry, land use and agriculture.
The briefing identifies the following priorities for action:
- Increase ambition across the economy
- Accelerate the decarbonisation of power, and set out a clear vision for UK power generation providing for increased demand
- Set out a joined-up strategy for UK domestic transport – putting decarbonisation as an essential requirement
- Introduce new standards and support to ensure UK homes are renovated to improve energy efficiency
- Use the opportunity of the new Environment and Agriculture Bills to create and implement a new, holistic vision for UK agriculture
- Support targeted innovation to help decarbonise strategically important but hard-to-abate industrial sectors.
Above all, the briefing highlights that the net zero challenge will require clear leadership from government, delivered through open and transparent engagement that allows all parts of society to engage and take ownership.
