10 February 2026 – CLG Europe has published a new Business Briefing, Roots revival: Why nature-based carbon removals are a key opportunity for Europe, setting out why high-integrity nature-based carbon removals (NbCR) can play a vital role in strengthening Europe’s climate delivery while accelerating nature recovery.

Europe’s economy is deeply dependent on healthy ecosystems, yet over 80 per cent of protected habitats are in poor condition, and pressures on soils and water are intensifying. These trends already pose material risks to business and finance. As the EU works towards climate neutrality by 2050 and implements the Nature Restoration Law, the briefing underlines why credible, high-integrity approaches to carbon removals and nature-based solutions are becoming strategically important for Europe’s competitiveness and resilience.
The briefing shows how NbCR, alongside rapid emissions reductions, can help close the gap to Europe’s climate goals by addressing residual emissions in hard-to-abate sectors, while delivering co-benefits for biodiversity, climate adaptation and local communities. Drawing on real-world examples from leading companies, it highlights NbCR as a proven, scalable and relatively low-cost complement to other climate solutions.
As a cross-sector group of leading companies, CLG Europe brings this business perspective into the debate, helping to shape practical approaches that strengthen both climate delivery and nature recovery. To ensure NbCR deliver genuine and lasting outcomes, CLG Europe members set out 10 Business Principles for High-Integrity Nature-Based GHG Removals, providing a robust, science-aligned and socially just framework to inform future EU policies affecting NbCR.
