Business leadership for a climate neutral economy

12 November 2024 – Quote from Director of the UK Corporate Leaders Group, Beverley Cornaby:

"With the UK Government’s announcement of a 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) carbon emissions reduction target to reduce territorial greenhouse gas emissions by 81% from 1990 levels, we now have a clear 10 year goal to drive business investment and action.

"By adopting the Climate Change Committee's recommendations, a position supported by businesses in a letter to the Prime Minister ahead of COP29, the UK - as the first G7 country to announce its 2035 NDC - is sending a powerful signal to industry, investors, and society that it is committed to achieving a sustainable and resilient future that is aligned to the Paris Agreement of keeping warming within 1.5 degrees and avoiding the worst impacts of climate change.

"However, to make reaching this longer-term target a reality, the UK must first maintain a strong focus on meeting its existing 2030 target by setting out a clear, decisive path forward. Government must work closely with business clearly defining their role and working collaboratively to deliver the transition.

"Accelerating policy action and implementation on electrification, market growth, skills, housing, and integrating climate and nature goals is essential. These efforts will lay the groundwork for 2035, providing businesses with the confidence to invest in the transition and support the UK’s leadership in climate action. Achieving this ambition will require effective, cross-departmental collaboration and cohesive policies to drive transformative progress in this critical decade.”
