25 June 2025 - The Climate Change Committee has released its first assessment of the new government’s progress on reducing emissions. CLG UK provided comments on the 2025 report, which was laid before Parliament today.
The Progress Report found that government policies to reduce emissions have improved since last year. With more action, the UK can hit its legally binding climate targets and improve energy security for households and businesses across the UK.
Bev Cornaby, Director, UK Corporate Leaders Group, said:
"Business welcomes today’s news from the Climate Change Committee that the UK is headed in the right direction to reduce its territorial emissions, having now halved them since 1990 levels. If the UK government can keep focussed and maintain momentum in implementing the right supporting policies and developing enabling markets, it could still hit its legally binding carbon targets, providing a more stable policy environment to attract investment.
A key recommendation within this – to make electricity cheaper to support the transition – has already been addressed for over 7,000 businesses within the Industrial Strategy released earlier this week. More support will still be needed for businesses outside of the energy sector to accelerate action to reduce emissions, particularly to support the electrification of industry, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Businesses will be keen to for the UK government to respond positively and set out clearly how it could deliver this."
