What is the Ibero-American Business Network for Green Growth?

The Ibero-American Business Network for Green Growth (IABN) has been established in response to the urgent challenges posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and the need for sustainable economic development across Latin America. Our mission is to advocate for a sustainable economy that aligns with regional needs and global environmental commitments, fostering growth while protecting our natural resources.

The IABN currently comprises of 17 members across sectors and countries, bringing together a range of businesses, business groups and non-governmental/ civil society stakeholders in support of our mission: BBVA, CECODES, CLG-Chile, DERES, Grupo Ser Educacional/ Universidade da Amazônia, Climate High-Level Champions, Iberdrola, NXT Lab, One Point 5, Peru Sostenible, Profonanpe, RE100, Spanish Green Growth Group, UN Global Compact, UN Global Compact Brazil, UN Global Compact Mexico and World Resources Institute – with the Corporate Leaders Network at CISL acting as Secretariat for the Group.

Latin America stands at a critical juncture. As a region rich in renewable resources and biodiversity, it holds unique opportunities for green innovation and sustainable practices. With COP30 approaching, the IABN commits to being a proactive voice for sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economic transformation in Latin America and beyond.

Our work in the lead-up to COP30

COP30: a key opportunity for Latin America

From 10 to 21 November 2025, Brazil will host the annual UNFCCC climate conference or COP30 in Belém, the capital of the state of Pará, in the heart of the Amazon.

COP30 presents a significant advocacy opportunity to showcase the leadership, challenges and opportunities within the region and build momentum around strategic priorities. As the first COP held in the Amazon region, COP30 offers a global platform to advocate for stronger international support and investment in Latin America's green transition. Corporate advocacy has a particular role to play in this context, calling for the policies and laws that businesses need to advance climate action.

Emerging priorities for COP30

The COP30 Presidency recently outlined its negotiating priorities, notably calling for enhanced public-private collaboration to implement the Paris Agreement by taking forward the findings of the Global Stocktake. Concluded at COP28 in 2023, the Global Stocktake includes global calls for efforts towards halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030, and for accelerating the global energy transition. Specifically, Article 28 of the Global Stocktake calls on Parties to accelerate efforts to triple renewable energy capacity globally and double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030, and to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly, and equitable manner.

Spotlighting Latin America

Half of the countries in Latin America have pledged to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century or earlier. With the effects of climate change coming to the fore and challenges to energy security, the region must also accelerate the clean energy shift to reduce its dependency on both fossil fuels and hydropower. In 2024, 79% of new electricity capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean was predicted to come from renewables and 85% of its electricity is expected to come from clean sources by 2050. With abundant renewable energy resources and access to large reserves of critical minerals, Latin America is well placed to thrive in the clean energy transition, contributing to global energy security and climate goals while bolstering its own economy and energy security.

Latin America’s leadership and willingness in the clean energy race mean that targeted support and streamlined national efforts can unlock major regional and global benefits.

With this unique position also comes the opportunity for the region to shape what a just, inclusive and prosperous energy transition looks like in practice.

In the lead up to COP30, the IABN will take these messages to both Latin American governments and the COP30 Presidency to unlock the necessary policy change.
