COP22

The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group (CLG) and the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) will be present and active at COP22, marking the first meeting of Parties to the Paris Agreement following its entry into force on 4 November.

The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP22) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 7–18 November 2016. CISL and the CLG will be present at COP22 to promote swift implementation of the Paris Agreement, encourage EU climate leadership and foster business innovation to tackle climate change. Below are some of the highlights of the CLG and CISL activities at COP22.

Global Climate Action Agenda Business and Industry Day

At COP22 in Marrakesh there will be a series of thematic sessions organised as part of the Global Climate Action Agenda led by the Climate Champions. The Business and Industry Champions sessions will be co-facilitated by CDP and We Mean Business, partnering with UN Global Compact and La Confédération Générale des Entreprises du Maroc (CGEM).

CLG Director Jill Duggan will give a keynote speech at the opening of the ‘Business and Industry Showcase’ session at 13:30.

This event in open to all with accreditation to the COP22 ‘blue zone’.


Sustainable Innovation Forum – ‘Sustainable Business as a Driver of Change’

This event, moderated by Philippe Joubert, Chair of The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group, will discuss investing in the development of circular economy processes, implementing environmentally conscious practices across all business areas and monitoring and reporting on carbon reduction efforts to improve performance. This official UNFCCC side-event, co-hosted by CISL, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and the Government of Cameroon, will explore the alliance between business and technology and how innovative approaches in this context can help scale up mitigation and adaptation efforts in low-income regions.

The event will be chaired by Jill Duggan, CISL Director of Policy, and participants include the Dutch Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, the Cameroon Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and business leaders including Harry Verhaar from Philips Lighting, a member of the CLG.

High-level event: ‘Driving Innovation across the EU’

The European Union has committed itself to reducing its emissions by 80-95% in 2050. Through its policy measures over the last decade and more, the EU is on course to meet its 2020 emissions reduction targets. As the Paris Agreement enters into force, Europe is well placed to continue to demonstrate leadership for the transition to a zero-carbon, resilient economy.  

This high-level event, delivered in partnership with the We Mean Business (WMB) coalition, will bring together Ministers, business leaders and experts from across Europe to reflect on the lessons learned in the EU and discuss how to take policy making and business innovation to the next level.

Press briefing:  ‘Future Proofing: Why we need long-term climate plans’

As governments start elaborating their long-term climate strategies, business and subnational leaders will present their perspective on 2050 national plans, as a necessary complement to more short-term NDCs. Organised jointly by CLG and We Mean Business. 


High-level dinner: Network of Green Growth Platforms

Date: Wednesday 16 November

CISL, in partnership with the EU Green Growth Platform and the CLG, will hold a high-level, closed-doors, dinner event to connect green growth focused platforms from around the world and explore the potential of and appetite for a ‘Global Green Growth Network’.

The dinner will bring together Ministers, business leaders and green growth experts from the EU, Latin America, and Asia to informally discuss enhanced coordination and collaboration as we pursue green growth paths.
