The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group (CLG) and the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) will be present at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24). This is the most important round of climate negotiations since COP21, aiming to finalise the practical implementation of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Monday 10 December

  • Official UNFCCC side event “Financing low-carbon energy projects: the role of long-term policy, de-risking, PPPs and MDBs”- Monday 10 December, 18.30-20.00, Room Narew, COP24 venue [Free access, badge required].

CISL is co-organising this side event with ETH Zurich and the Lebanese Ministry of Environment. The event will discuss the options for attracting private and public private partnership investment in low-carbon energy infrastructure to achieve the SDGs. Topics for discussion will include the role of long-term policy, PPPs, de-risking, faster ‘greening’ of MDB portfolios and the GCF. The event will convene business leaders, academics and international development agencies.

Tuesday 11 December

  • High-level roundtable: “International Ambition, European Action - The Role of Europe in Anchoring International Ambition on Climate Change” - Tuesday 11 December, 15.30-18.00, Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice [Invitation only].

CISL, in partnership with the EU Green Growth Platform and the CLG, is co-organising this ministerial-level roundtable event with the B-Team. The event will discuss the release of the European Commission’s 2050 vision paper and its scenarios in the context of COP24 discussions and the 2020 NDC ratchet. Invitees include Ministers of GGG countries, senior business leaders, EU Commission representatives and topic experts.

The dinner will follow the roundtable and connect like-minded policy and business leaders from Europe, including from the CEE region, Latin America, Asia and North America to informally discuss enhanced coordination and collaboration to achieve national ambitions. Organised by DG Research and Innovation. Martin Porter, Executive Chair, CISL Brussels, will be part of the panel of this side-event. The event will discuss the final report of the High Level Panel of the European decarbonisation initiative, which was presented simultaneously with the Commission Communication on the long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy.


Thursday 13 December

  • EU Side event: “Towards a thriving carbon neutral industry in Europe by 2050”, Thursday 13 December, 12.30-14.00, Room Brussels, EU Pavilion [Free access, badge required]. #EU2050

Organised by Sustainable Process Industry through Resource and Energy Efficiency SPIRE Public–Private Partnership, the European Commission (Research and Innovation, and Carbon Market Watch (CMW).

Martin Porter, Executive Chair, CISL Brussels, will be part of the panel. This event will highlight results of SPIRE projects, funded through Horizon2020, as well as upcoming initiatives that have the potential to make an important contribution towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The panel debate with speakers from industry, policy-making and civil society will discuss concrete examples of how CO2 emissions can be reduced in European industries through industrial symbiosis and a circular economy, while maintaining the societal benefits stemming from innovative, climate-friendly products.
