16 June 2017 – Members of The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group (CLG) today joined with senior politicians, policymakers, business leaders and civil society from across Romania to explore some of the challenges and opportunities on the European and Romanian low carbon agenda.

Romania is one of the eleven EU Member States to have already achieved its national 2020 renewable energy target. The event, jointly organised with Sandbag, a leading climate policy think tank, aimed to demonstrate the opportunity for Romania to take a leading role in the low carbon arena, highlight the business case for increased low carbon investment in the Romanian economy and celebrate the opportunity of renewable energy for all Eastern European countries.
Keynote speakers included Norica Nicolai MEP, Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, Viorel Toma, President of the National Agency for Environment Protection, and Baroness Worthington, Executive Director of Environmental Defense Fund Europe and Founding Director of Sandbag.
Panel discussions focused on investments in energy and industrial sectors, and how to unlock greater climate mitigation through addressing energy efficiency in Romanian cities.

Speaking at the event, Eliot Whittington, Deputy Director CLG said:

“This event provided a great opportunity to see how progressive businesses in Romania are seizing upon low carbon opportunities. It is also highlighted the important role of EU climate policies and international partners in enabling Romania to advance its green growth agenda.”
This event is the second in a series of events organised by CLG and Sandbag. The first event, which took place in Prague in May, brought together central and local government officials, businesses representatives, and policy experts to discuss EU climate policies and their economic impact on the Czech economy. They explored how business and policymakers can seize upon green growth opportunities and how to optimise EU climate policies to promote new low-carbon investment in Central and Eastern Europe.
